A flat solar water heater is a device where sunlight shines on the surface of a collector, passes through a transparent cover plate, and is projected onto a heat absorbing plate. The heat generated by solar radiation is efficiently absorbed and converted into thermal energy by a blue or black film coating with high absorption and low emissivity, and then transferred to a heat transfer medium. A flat solar collector consists of four main components: a heat absorbing plate, a transparent cover plate, an insulation layer, and an outer shell. By using a circulating pipeline and a water pump, the heated working fluid is transferred to cold water through a heat exchange coil, continuously increasing the water temperature and storing the heated water in an insulated water tank.

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of flat solar collectors?

Advantages of flat solar water heater

1. Flat panel solar water heaters are very suitable for building integration requirements. Due to the planar structural characteristics of flat solar water heaters, they are not constrained by form or size during design, and their form and structure are flexible and easy to integrate with building components. In addition, its metal material collector plate provides great convenience for installation and maintenance.

2. Its thermal efficiency is very high. Flat panel solar collectors do not have gaps like vacuum tubes. They are a continuous plane, and when exposed to sunlight, the entire surface of the collector can receive sunlight. Therefore, under the same lighting area and sunlight intensity, the daily average efficiency of flat panel solar water heaters is more than 6% higher than that of vacuum tubes.

3. The pressure bearing performance of flat solar water heaters is very good. The heat absorbing plate of the flat solar collector is made of metal material, and the connection between the collector and the water storage tank is also made of metal parts, so it can withstand the pressure from tap water and circulation pump.

4. The performance is also very stable. In some large places, such as hotels, swimming pools, factories, etc., the use of solar water heaters requires a large number of solar collectors to form a large-scale water supply system. The vacuum tube solar water heater uses rubber components for connection, making the system very unstable to use, while the flat solar collector is connected to the system through metal, making the system very stable.

Disadvantages of flat solar collectors

1. It is more suitable for use in non freezing areas, otherwise there may still be freezing problems in winter. Due to the fact that the core of flat solar panels is not vacuum filled, although insulation materials are used for filling, the insulation effect is still not good. Compared to vacuum tube solar energy, it dissipates heat quickly and at lower temperatures outdoors in winter. Although using secondary heating solves the problem of not being able to use it in winter, it also adds intermediate links, which may result in some heat loss.

2. There will be a certain amount of heat loss. The core of flat solar panels is not vacuum, and the insulation effect is not very good when paired with related equipment. Compared to vacuum tube solar panels, they dissipate heat faster in winter.

In fact, among solar energy products integrated with buildings, flat panel commercial solar water heating systems are products that balance safety and excellent performance. Although the advantages and disadvantages of flat solar collectors are still more obvious compared to vacuum tube solar water systems, vacuum tube solar water systems have disadvantages such as pipe explosion and non pressure when combined with high-rise buildings. The flat solar collector is the core heat collecting component of the flat type split solar water heating system, and its performance directly affects the energy efficiency of the entire solar water heating system. Improving the thermal performance of flat solar water heaters is not only beneficial for fully utilizing solar energy, but also increases the reliability of the collector. The thermal insulation and absorption rate of the heat absorbing body are the two main factors affecting the thermal performance of flat solar collectors. The absorption rate of existing heat absorbing body coating materials has basically reached a level of 0.92 or above, and there is limited room for improvement. Therefore, improving the insulation performance of flat solar collectors is a key factor in enhancing their thermal performance.
